Highly regarded in the Melbourne fashion industry, Vy Bhagwandas has worked as the buyer and product developer for many of Australia’s most successful and recognized labels. In June 2009, Vy approached me to design the invitation for her 30th birthday party, an event that attracted the who’s who of the Australian fashion and design industries. A lavish affair, Vy had booked out Troika, an iconic bar situated in the heart of Melbourne, renowned for its strong USSR aesthetic. Drawing inspiration from the Russian Constructivists, I created a piece that not only gave guests an idea about the bar, but also allowed them to find it with directions incorporated into the design. Utilising the constructivists use of line and form I created an invitation that was strong, sharp and, most of all, suitable for the occasion.
